After we enjoyed the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center we set out toward the battlefield. The Battle of Gettysburg occurred all around the town of Gettysburg, PA. There are some locations where the heaviest casualties were sustained. We took the children on the driving tour which is well mapped out for visitors.
I love cemeteries so we drove through old Evergreen Cemetery established in 1854.
Loved the tree lined lanes with old rock walls.
As we drove toward the main battlefield we were in awe of the view.
Nothing but grass is growing on the battlefield so these daffodils really stood out.
Looking across the battlefield toward the Eternal Light of Peace Memorial.
It was such a gorgeous time of day. We caught the sun just as it was setting.
The kids were excited to see the Horsemen's Memorial because they became honorary Horseman when they finished the Junior Ranger program at the Visitor Center.
The Eternal Light Peace Memorial was dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on July 3, 1938, which was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Looking out over the city of Gettysburg, PA from the memorial.
There are incredible canons there which the kids loved!
The clouds parted long enough for the warm glow of the setting sun to create a perfect photo!
There is a tower you can hike up to take in the incredible view of the entire battlefield.
The pictures below show our view from right to left.
Just as the sun went down.
Such a beautiful end to what turned out to be such a lovely day.
The 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg is taking place July 1-3 2013. I recommend making a point to visit this hallowed ground with your children sometime soon.
